Straight Flush over Straight Flush

February 12th, 2008

Wow. WOWOWOW. I realise flush over flush happens all the time in Pot Limit Omaha, but Straight Flush over Straight Flush? That’s just painful….

I’m sure he was like: “w00t I’m up against the nut flush here” when the guy shoved his chips in. Terrible cold deck.

Bwin Poker: Online Poker Room

January 20th, 2008

Bwin.com is one of the biggest online gambling sites on the web. It is actually a very simple looking site but that just makes it easy to navigate. Bwin has been online since 1999 but has failed to really make an impression. It has good player numbers but it is largely due to OnGame’s shared traffic.

BWIN currently has a $100 sign up bonus and numerous $300 freerolls for players. It has the King of the hill Promotion which requires you to qualify for each level instead of buying in so rewards actually skill instead of a big bankroll.

The variations offered at BWIN Poker include Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Seven-Card Stud, Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo and Five-Card Draw. All variations and limits are represented. The competition is relatively soft at the lower limits. You can also play casino games 20 languages, skill games and bet on sports if you like that sort of thing.

BWIN Poker uses the OnGame network platform and draws its traffic from the network’s shared player base. The BWIN Poker software has a unique design and good functionality and there is both a download version and a Java client; the downloaded version is always better, but the Java client allows you to play away from home. It is also a good choice for Mac users, who can play the Java version without any special installs. The graphics are good and you can multi-table with ease. You can use your mobile to play poker with BWIN, so you will never be too far from the tables.

Hellmuth talks about losing half a million to Ivey

December 24th, 2007

The Poker Brat Phil Ivey talks about losing over half a million dollars to the ever so lucky Phil Ivey in a chinese poker game playing for one (and later on two) thousand dollars per point. Now, anyone who knows the game of Chinese poker a tiny bit knows that’s a huge amount of cash to be playing chinese for — resulting in Phil pretty much offloading a house there…

It’s great to see Phil handle himself well in that situation — from charity to family — this guy knows his stuff. It’s a strange vid, but enjoy it none the less! ;)

Why Play Tournament Poker?

December 8th, 2007

The recent No Limit Hold’em poker boom has been fuelled “World Poker Tour” (WPT) and “World Series of Poker” (WSOP) being televised. Particularly the success of internet player Chris Moneymaker who was an internet player turned household name. What other arena can you turn $200 into $200, 000 in an evening playing online?

WPT chips In Multi-Table Tournaments there are a larger group of players but you are playing only against those on your table. So it is essentially like playing a very long SnG. As the game progresses and players get knocked out, tables merge and players move until only the Final Table remains. These MTTs typically pay somewhere around the top 10% of the field with the winner taking the biggest payout (usally about 20% or so). The number of players can range from a handful of players spread over two tables to a few hundred or even a few thousand. You can pay very little to enter these (or nothing in a freeroll) and potentially turn a huge profit if you beat the odds and make the final table. The law of averages says you are unlikely to make the final table often and just making it into the money means you probably won’t even turn a profit. Read the rest of this entry »

Ivey the poker player -> Ivey the underwear model

November 30th, 2007

This is the most exciting poker news I have read all week. Professional poker player Phil Ivey is according to Blog-Tique the new underwear model for a big name in high end men’s underwear.

I can imagine Phil having a decent physique — but still, are poker players going to be underwear models from now on? :D

Pocket Pairs Preflop in No Limit Hold’em

November 30th, 2007

JJBeing dealt a pocket pair can feel like a strong hand but they can lead you down a troubled road if not played correctly. The best advice is to play the top ones strongly but be prepared to let any pair go if things do not flop your way. Whilst pocket pairs have strong preflop value as the board is dealt they can lose this value rapidly. While, every poker player can tell you a time when their AK was beaten by deuces, it happens less often than it feels like it does. (You just tend to remember being beaten by deuces)

Top pairs like AA, KK, and QQ quite rightly deserve raises and re-raises. They are the statistical favorites in most hands. Playing against fewer players will only increase the value of these pairs. AA is 85% favourite to win a heads up to showdown but this percentage decreases substantially in multi-way pots.

With other pocket pairs you are looking to flop set to make a very strong, well disguised hand. Flopping a set when holding a pocket pair it only happens about 12% of the time. Not quite so rare that it isn’t worth making a small call to see the flop. When the serendipitous moment happens however, you need make it count. Don’t slow-play a flopped set. Chances are the other person will think they have the stronger hand and will call to the river. Which means a big pot an a big win for you.

Betting pre-flop: Weeding out the weak

November 30th, 2007

akWhy bet at all preflop. I mean if you can get in cheap. Sure that is better than voluntarily putting money into the pot? Yes and no. If you are holding an iffy hand like a pair of 10s at a full table the way you bet could mean the difference of winning and loosing. A pair of 10s will hold up quite well on a low uncoordinated board but are you willing to chance it? There are two things that can be done. Get in cheap and hope the board goes in your favor. If you flop a 10 or top pair great.

Or you can make a strong bet and make everyone else fold and take the pot right there. You risk being called. So you have to be confident of your post flop play and be willing to let the hand go if all flops a bit Pete Tong.

As you get better at reading your opponents, you will learn against what sort of player and in what position you can get away with that kind of play. But if you are first to act you will not go far wrong making a bet with the premium pairs and the high suited connectors. Make people pay to see what you are holding. Weeding out weak hands preflop will only make your strong hand stronger.

Starting Hands in No Limit Hold’em - Position is Everything

November 29th, 2007

poker chickLike many things in life position is a huge advantage a in Texas Hold’em. Although unlike life you generally don’t want to be front of the queue. If you are the first player to act you will have to do so without seeing what every body else is doing first.

In poker your position is how near you are to the dealer button. Being on the button is the best position to be in. In every round of betting (except preflop) preflop the button will be the last one to act. This provides the tactical advantage of seeing what other players do before you. This is great, especially if you have been profiling the players. You can assess whether your hand will hold up against the tight player’s big preflop raise.

If you know how many players are in the hand, you can act accordingly. Some hands will hold up much better against better few players at make it worth calling when otherwise you might fold.

In an early Position you can play only the premium hands. AA-QQ. AK and AQ

In the middle position you can add the premium hands plus middle pairs and other high suited connectors. JJ-99 and AK AQ KQ QJ and JT. Also AJs

In the late position you can add hands that are great for flush draws such as Axs and Kxs and all the other pocket pairs.

I would recommend reading Lee Jones’, Winning Low Limit Hold’em for an excellent guide to changing starting hand criteria with position.
